EXPERIENCING THE TRUE ESSENCE OF NAGA VILLAGES THROUGH HERITAGE WALKS

India Trail in partnership with the Government of Nagaland, came up with the idea of ‘Heritage Walks,’ which are designed to enable visitors to experience the true essence of Nagaland, and to take one on a journey to some of the most beautiful places in Nagaland during this Hornbill Festival 2022. Truly said, the heart of Nagaland lies in its villages and the whole idea is to showcase the history, lifestyle and social structure of the Naga villages.

Nagaland is known for its beautiful naturescape and its beautiful villages. Mention may be made of some of the Naga villages which are included in the list of ‘Heritage Walks.’ Phüsachodü village, one of the biggest villages in Phek district is one of the hotspots for tourists. Well known for the   majestic Naga houses, Naga costumes and food. One can experience the history of Nagaland by visiting this village. Kigwema village, nestled in the foothills of Mount Japfü, the second highest peak in Nagaland, is a hilly village in Kohima and is one of the many places which was once attacked by the Japanese troupe during the World War II.  Kohima village which is considered to be the second biggest village in Asia, is a must visit for anyone visiting Nagaland, where one can marvel at the beautifully carved out wooden gates and enjoy the scenic beauty of the village.

Along with the ‘Heritage Walk,’ one can also experience the ‘World War II Battle of Kohima Walk.’ This tour programme will guide one through the battlefield of the Battle of Kohima, giving a glimpse of the graves of Indian, British, and allied soldiers who gave their lives in the year 1944, and pay homage to the fallen soldiers. During this tour, one can also visit the place where a Medium M3 Lee Tank that was abandoned during World War II. The Battle of Kohima Walk will end with a visit to the ‘Heritage Hotel’ which was the home of the Deputy Commissioner during the British era and is one of the oldest bungalows in the State, located at Officers’ Hill, Kohima town.

The Heritage Walks started on 2nd December 2022, and will culminate on 10th December 2022. The day tour for Phüsachodü village will start at 9:00AM on 10th December, from the Kisama Heritage Village. For Kigwema village, the tour will start from 12:00 Noon from Kisama Heritage Village. Kohima Village Walk will start at 11:00 AM from Kisama Heritage Village. 

World War-II Battle of Kohima Walk, which also started on 2nd December 2022, will culminate on 10th December 2022. It will start from two places - Kisama Heritage Village and Red Cross Building, Kohima at 9:00AM on 10th December 2022.
