WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATED AT MOKOKCHUNG

In Mokokchung the World Environment Day was celebrated on 5th June 2024, held at Shisalen Riju. The event was organized by the District Planning & Development Board, Mokokchung, in collaboration with the District Hub for Empowerment of Women, Mokokchung, under the Aegis of BBBP, under the theme 'Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience.'

Commissioner & Secretary (Rtd.) & Founder of Earth Alliance Thangi Manen addressed on the grim reality of environmental degradation, citing floods, landslides, air, and water pollution as consequences of human impact. With 50% of Nagaland's land already degraded, as per an ISRO report, she underscored the urgent need for action. A staunch advocate against plastic pollution, she shared her experiences in combating the issue and proposed solutions like multi-layer plastic segregation and utilizing single-use plastics as fuel in cement factories. She urged for rainwater harvesting and emphasized the importance of keeping the Milak River clean.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) & Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) Administrator, Chumlamo Humtsoe echoed the call for environmental stewardship, highlighting initiatives like waste segregation and composting at the household level in Mokokchung.

Representing ABAM, Maong Jamir emphasized humanity's responsibility to safeguard the environment. Village Council Chairman, Mokokchung Village Mapuyanger Longkumer, commended DPDB's efforts and urged for continued collaboration.

To commemorate the occasion and promoting environmental awareness and action among the youth.", a Half Marathon Green Run, organized by the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) in collaboration with the District Education Officer (DEO), saw participation from students representing 12 schools. Certificates and cash prizes were presented to the winners. Lochum Kikon from GHS Dilong secured the 1st position in the female category, followed by Opanglemla Jamir and Akumbenla Kichu from GMHSS. In the male category, Bumo Takum from GHS Dilong clinched the top spot, with Pheniang from MGHSS and Yiangnou Konyak from GHS Dilong securing second and third place, respectively.
