'GREENING THE EARTH' INITIATIVE TO COMMEMORATE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

In commemoration of World Environment Day 2024, the Sustainable Development Goals Coordination Centre (SDGCC) under the Department of Planning & Transformation organized a 'Greening the Earth' initiative by planting tree saplings at the Nagaland Civil Secretariat in Kohima, on 5 June 2024.

OSD (Planning) & SDG Nodal Officer Nayantara Sasikumar, IES, during the event said that the key objective of this initiative is to highlight our commitment and mobilize collective action towards addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability. Nayantara also emphasized the urgency of planting more trees and increasing greenery as our State is witnessing the increasing frequency and severity of heat waves. She added that in Nagaland, the impacts of climate change are felt not just in heat but also in landslides, storms, floods, droughts, biodiversity loss, and health issues.

She further said that with manifold climate-related challenges, the need to take action towards restoring the land assumes more importance than ever. She said that each tree we plant today represents a crucial step towards reversing the environmental damage inflicted. She also called upon all to commit to lifelong environmental stewardship and pledge to reduce our carbon footprint.

Sasikumar also highlighted the importance of SDG 12 i.e Sustainable Consumption and Production for protecting the environment. She also thanked the Department of Environment, Forests & Climate Change for providing the plant saplings to SDGCC to carry forward the 'Greening the Earth' initiative.
